چکیده

Camphor-10-sulfonic acid (CSA)1 is routinely used for calibrating circular dichroism (CD) instruments. However, CSA is hygroscopic, so an accurate concentration can be obtained only by measuring its absorbance peak at 285nm. Hence, calibrations are highly dependent on having a correct value for the extinction coeYcient for this compound. Following an extensive search of the literature, the origins of the commonly accepted value for the molar extinction coeYcient for CSA of 34.5 M¡1 cm¡1 at 285 nm can be ascribed to Chen and Yang [1], who cited Lowry and French [2], although Lowry and French reported the value at 284 nm to be 35 M¡1 cm¡1, following measurements at 286 and 292 nm [3]. (There was actually no data point at the peak maximum.) The value of 34.52 M¡1 cm¡1 at 285nm is reported in instrument manuals without reference, usually quoted in the form of a 1 mg/ml solution producing an absorbance of 0.743 in a 5-mm cell (also see [4]). Recently, more stringent methods of standardizing the calibration of conventional and synchrotron radiation CD instruments have been developed [5]. Considering that CSA is the most widely used standard for calibration and cross-correlation for both types of CD instruments, we decided to re-examine the measurement of the extinction coeYcient of CSA, concentrating on reproducibility (error levels) and measurements at the actual peak maximum.

A new reference material for UV-visible circular dichroism spectroscopy.

To obtain accurate and consistent measurements from circular dichroism (CD) instruments over time and from different laboratories, it is important that they are properly calibrated. The characteristics of the available reference materials are not ideal to ensure proper calibration as they typically only give peaks in one or two spectral regions, and often have issues concerning purity and stabi...

Three 2D Ag(I)-framework isomers with helical structures controlled by the chirality of camphor-10-sulfonic acid.

Three 2D Ag(I)-framework isomers were constructed from enantiopure camphor-10-sulfonic acids or racemic camphor-10-sulfonic acids, together with achiral 4-aminobenzoic acids. In complex 1, (+)-camphor-10-sulfonic acids bridge the single left-handed helices that are made up of Ag ions and 4-aminobenzoic acids, generating a homochiral 2D layer. In such a structure, the interweaving of triple left...

In the near future, design of a new generation of drugs targeting proteins will be required. Considering the complex bond between the drug and protein, the structure and stability of the target protein should be considered. So far, a series of in vitro investigations have been conducted with the aim of predicting drug-biological medium interactions. In these studies, use of spectroscopic method...

Circular dichroism in valence photoelectron spectroscopy of free unoriented chiral molecules: Camphor and bromocamphor

The circular dichroism in the photoelectron angular distribution was investigated for valence photoionization of randomly oriented pure enantiomers of camphor and bromocamphor molecules using circularly polarized light in the vacuum ultraviolet. The forward-backward electron emission spectra were recorded simultaneously with two spectrometers at several opposite angles relative to the propagati...
